Did you know that not everyone has an internal monologue? I found this out recently and it blew my mind. Learn more about how this applies to this artist

Things are so very odd in our world right now. So many things are pushing and pulling on each of us it can help lead us in new artistic directions in painting. Extra time at home during the Covid pandemic has offered me the chance to explore creating abstract paintings in oil and cold wax medium. Check it out!

I'm happy to say that I've been painting a lot of dogs lately. As many of you, my dear readers, know - dogs have been a big part of my life. For MANY years I trained, traveled and showed my dogs in conformation, obedience, rally and (mostly) agility. So much fun!  These days, I spend my doggy time loving on and going for long walk with my current constant canine companion,  Phoebe.

I still have many friends and collectors that are dog lovers too in my life. A number of you (thank you!) have been asking me lately to do commissions of dogs for you. Every dog is unique and I've been hav...

I'm thrilled to share that my piece "Low Tide" won an award at this year's CCAL Juried Show. This is the first time I was brave enough to enter the Masters category (versus Amateur) so I wasn't expecting to receive an award this year. Love that the jurors felt it deserved this honor. Thank you to Chris Groves for selecting my art for this award! And, thank you to Jaime Bohnke with S&S Destination Trucky's for sponsoring the award!

Shhh... It's a secret.

I’ve been working hard on a commission recently. It’s a surprise gift, so no photos until the recipient gets it.

That doesn’t mean nothing else has been happening though! I’ve been busy creating monotype paper prints for use in creating textured, layered background surfaces and digital reference prep for future paintings.

I’m thrilled to report that, in addition to the commission piece, several of my works have sold recently (“Saluda River View”, “Kiss of Color” and “What’s Up, Duck?”). It’s always exciting when someone falls in love with one of my pieces! Two of these have...

So excited and honored that two out of my three entries at the 24th Annual Crooked Creek Art League won awards!

This is one of the largest art shows in the midlands each year with 128 pieces of artwork and 58 artists this year. I'm in good company: the competition was steep with a wealth of really beautiful artworks this year.

The Invitation Postcard is extra exciting because it means that this piece of art will be front and center on the CCAL invitational materials for next year's show!

Abstract 101 was a big surprise. Abstracts are a big departure from my normal style but a dear friend c...

My dear friend, Judy, recently lost her older dog to cancer. Tivo was a big sweet goofy loving dog. He loved to come over and swim in the lake and he had some adorable Border Collie quirks. He will be missed. I decided I wanted to do something for her and as a tribute to him. So, of course, I painted him!  His painting is now online!

Update: I'm very proud that out of hundreds of entrants, this piece won 3rd Place in the Amateur Division of the 2018 SC State Fair!

I was lucky enough to join a group of fellow painters (Shout out to #AboutFace) at a beautiful site recently.

A dozen of us painted plein at the beautiful historic Kincaid-Anderson House near Jenkinsville, SC. It was built in 1774 and has absolutely wonderfully scenic grounds and gardens. We had wonderful weather too. Really everything for a perfect morning of painting. And I enjoyed, it, I really did. And yet, despite all the advantages, my painting was, well... let's just say it wasn't my best work. Truthfully, one of my worst in a while.

I feel lucky though, it means I'm still stretching and...

My latest painting is now online!

The head tilt of the duckling makes me wonder just what's on his mind. There's wonderful light in this piece. I am loving learning more about how to paint the light!

I started this piece shortly before my mom passed away unexpectedly. It seems fitting because she collected duck things for several years. So, this one is in honor of her memory. Miss you Mom!!

This piece is on a cradled wood panel with painted sides so a frame is not necessary, but could be easily added.

My latest painting is now online!

This one is a portrait of a male Blue Grosbeak in full breeding plumage before a loose pale background.

Grosbeak literally translates to Large Beak and it's easy to see why. These are often easier to hear than to see, but they're a treat when you do!  Want to learn more about them? Visit

This piece is a derivation based on an original photo by Jodi Powell-Newell. Unrestricted license was granted to use the image for reference to create this original copyrighted work.
